Understanding Wood Movement: Why Solid Trim Needs Room to Breathe
Solid wood never really stops moving, even after it’s installed and painted. Good trim work plans for that instead of fighting it.
Why wood moves
Wood absorbs and releases moisture from the air constantly, expanding when humidity rises and contracting when it drops. Across a Southern year, that’s a real swing — humid summers, dry heating season. A board doesn’t stop moving just because it’s been nailed and caulked.
What happens when it’s not planned for
Trim installed bone-tight in one season with no allowance for movement will split, gap, or pop its miters in another. This shows up most in long runs of baseboard, wide window casing, and staircase skirt boards — anywhere a solid piece of wood spans a long distance without a joint to relieve the stress.
This is also exactly why MDF fails differently than solid wood in wet areas — it doesn’t breathe and shrink back, it just swells and stays swollen. Different material, different failure, same underlying lesson: plan for the wood’s actual behavior, not just how it looks the day it goes in.
