Coffered, Vaulted, or Beamed? Choosing a Ceiling Treatment
A ceiling treatment is one of the highest-impact things you can do to a room — and one of the easiest to get wrong for the space you actually have.
Coffered ceilings
A grid of recessed panels bordered by beams, usually with crown detail. Reads as formal and architectural. Coffers need real ceiling height to work — under nine feet, the grid can feel like it’s pressing down rather than adding depth.
Vaulted and beamed ceilings
A vaulted ceiling follows the roofline up, adding volume without adding footprint — excellent for great rooms and open living spaces. Exposed beams, real or reclaimed-look, add texture and warmth to a vault without the formality of coffers.
Before drawing anything, I measure the room and check the ceiling height against the scale of the treatment being considered — that one step avoids most of the regret I see in ceilings done wrong.
