Board and Batten vs. Shiplap: Which Wall Treatment Fits Your Room
Both add texture to a flat wall. They read completely differently once they’re up.
Board and batten
Vertical boards with narrower battens covering the seams, usually run as a lower wainscot with a cap rail. Reads as structured and formal — strong in entries, dining rooms, and stair walls where a defined, architectural line suits the space.
Shiplap
Horizontal boards with a shadow-line reveal between each. Reads as more relaxed and textural, at home in living rooms, bedrooms, and fireplace feature walls. Shiplap also works painted in bold colors as a full accent wall in a way board and batten’s formality resists.
Either one is straightforward finish carpentry once the layout is planned correctly — the real skill is in the layout math so the pattern lands evenly on the wall, not in the boards themselves.
